The Journal

On RocksOur Conversation Starters with God Journal was first introduced at Willow Creek Community Church’s women's retreat in October of 2006. (They weren't able to experience the software.) Here's a sampling of the comments we received in their retreat evaluations about the journal when asked what they liked best:

  • That is beautiful and very practical. What a helpful resource.
  • The different aspects of prayer-praise, thanksgiving. It is beautifully supported by Scriptures.
  • The richness of Bible verses.
  • The artwork as an enabler of meditation and prayer.
  • Learning the different ways I can communicate with God. Awesome!
  • All the Bible verses at my fingertips.
  • The writing that is so personalized.
  • The idea that everyone experiences God differently and has a spiritual pathway.
  • The guidance through the journal is beautifully and thoughtfully organized.
  • The tips and tools presented to assist.
  • Ideas on how to end each day and the questions to ask about ourselves.
  • The questions that keep me looking deeper into my relationship with God.

Conversation Starters with God is a great tool for growing in intimacy with God. It is practical, easy to use, and adaptable to an individual’s spiritual condition. Lana Trent has pulled together an amazing resource for the Body of Christ.

Thank you for giving me a tool that helps give me focus and direction in my prayer life. This journal is wonderful for everyone, no matter where you are on your faith journey. The newest Christian and the most seasoned saint can benefit from the thoughtful words and organization.

Lana Trent has designed a creative tool that has the potential of strengthening your prayer life. "Conversation Starters with God" is just that; a unique system of focal points, scripture, multiple prayer guides, thought provoking visuals and Bible software. This is a perfect resource for anyone who is looking for a more disciplined and deeper prayer life.

Dust on the GroundThis work comes out of the author's own experience and desire to grow in her conversations with God. The art work puts the feeling and even emotion into the movement of prayer and of God's Word living and active and is worth lingering with and pondering over.

I think I'm like many men who need something concrete to get them started and keep them on track. The amazing thing about your work is that once it gets me started on a particular area like thanksgiving, I find myself staying there for sometime and then very naturally, the Holy Spirit leads me to another area of the journal, and so it goes. Soon I am lost in the wonder of God's grace as He leads me to texts cited throughout. I unhesitatingly recommend this to any man who really wants to connect with God on an intimate and ongoing basis. My sincere prayer is that this may find its way into the lives of thousands and thousands of Christians in many nations and languages.

I wanted to share my enthusiasm after using the Conversation Starters with God journal. The tabs are Biblical prompts for me as I visit and speak to people with a variety of pastoral needs. I have come to rely on this organizer to keep me on track: who I am praying with and for, the time, the content and when to have follow-up conversations. I now carry it with me, along with my Bible, to every meeting. Thank you for your vision and follow though that has increased the frequency and intentionality of my prayer life for others.

The Conversation Starters with God journal has really helped my prayer life to be consistently inclusive. I've had several friends in hospital lately and the journal pages help me to pray specifically about their conditions and recuperative process. The sections on Praise and Thanksgiving have facilitated quoting scripture and praying the names of God for different needs in my life. I truly feel my prayers are touching more lives and recording answered prayers has been greatly encouraging for me. Thanks for enhancement to my prayer life with the journal.

I have started to dig into the "Conversation Starters With God" journal. I think it's a really nice piece that I believe will help me in my prayer life.

For years I have struggled with what I would describe as a haphazard prayer life. I always started each week with the best of intentions, but found myself drifting from having meaningful communication with God. My Conversation Starters With God Prayer Journal has completely changed my prayer life. I now know what I need to pray about each day, and I feel closer to God and to those I'm praying for. Having Bible Verses for each day really focuses my thoughts. I'm so glad Lana responded to God's call to create this resource!

My wife may not get around to telling you, but she treasures the "prayer journal" which you have so beautifully brought together. Every morning she opens her devotions with that journal, praying for the constant, daily prayer points, and then the many , once-a-week subjects for prayer.
Glenn, Chicago

At times I have found myself needing to get into God's word, but having no clue as to where I should "look for help". Where would I find what I need at this particular moment? It was just too overwhelming! But with Conversation Starters, I can find what I need at any given time and I am not overwhelmed, but I find it a "comfort-tool" which helps me get through my particular period of struggle. I can easily find a scripture or two, or just turn the pages and mediate on the art work of a particular scripture. I can jot down my feelings and journal my emotions - all of things help me take a moment to "talk" to God and to turn to Him.This journal is a wonderful instrument of doing exactly what it says ... Starts a Conversation with God.

On Lana and Her Ministry

Dear Lana,

I’m glad to provide this letter of recommendation for your prayer journal project. During my years as senior minister of East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis, this program helped us achieve some wonderful results in helping our congregation become a more prayerful church.

  • Over 500 members committed to praying for the church daily.
  • Each staff member, elder, and deacon had seven people who prayed for him or her—and at least one person prayed for each church leader every day.

I appreciate how you worked with me, our staff, and our volunteer prayer ministry team to develop the content of the notebooks.

May God bless you as you expand this effort and help God’s people truly become, like the New Testament church, “devoted to prayer” (Acts 2:42).

I had been praying for over a year for someone to take prayer leadership when Lana came to the Gathering. Lana was passionate about helping others to develop a structure to pray, building a team, and investing prayer as a means for growth and change in our ministry. As God began to use Lana and her team, I felt more and more prayer coverage around the Gathering and my leadership. A greater desire for transformation and growth arose within the lives of our leadership core, which overflowed into the lives of those around them. Many of our leaders faced some very difficult issues during that time, yet we saw God’s faithfulness and growth in people’s lives along the way. That is what the church is about: transforming lives through the love of Jesus Christ. This begins with prayer. I believe Lana has the heart, passion, and calling to help the church become this agent of transformation by providing relevant prayer structures that support lifechange.

Our women’s superhuddle was very successful on the topic of prayer. The presentation was polished but so down to earth. Lana shared so many practical, freeing and hands on ideas for busy women. Lana was refreshing because she came as a fellow journeyer. Because she is a learner herself, she gave us concrete, practical tips on how to use this in real life. Before the seminar ended, our leaders requested that we do the seminar again so they could bring their small group members. It was truly an outstanding seminar as the evaluations gave merit but more importantly, our leaders were given a tool that is helping them pray better. Our women leaders are still talking about it.

Personally, the journal has organized my prayer life and helped me be more consistent and credible when saying that I’ll pray. I’ve highlighted key components, so that I can use it in the car with my 30 minute drive to work. I use it at every 1-1 meeting and write down my coaches prayer requests and pray then and there. Then I put it in the journal and pray for them weekly. How cool is that. During my monthly solitude day, I go through the whole journal and pray for all.. I know I’ve just started this, so l don’t think I’ve got it down pat...but so far, I’ve found this an invaluable tool that has revolutionized my prayer life.

I really appreciated what Lana shared with the Gathering in her teaching on prayer. She does a wonderful job of taking a subject that has been taught a lot of different ways, and makes it fresh, creative, interactive and very practical. She did a great job of helping our people recognize some of the real barriers in prayer while at the same time affirming them and helping them see practical ways to break through these barriers. Her approach to teaching is very creative and interactive. She doesn’t just talk “at” people, but  rather gives them practical, hands-on activities and concrete tools to do and think about during the teaching time and beyond. She uses humor well and helps people feel comfortable with this topic. I would encourage anyone looking to provide teaching on prayer to give strong consideration to what Lana is offering.
